🚨 Locks Are Dying Across the Bay — And It May Already Be in Your Home

Published: September 2025 by Action Lock & Safe

Tonight at 7, our investigation uncovers a silent threat hiding in garages, kitchen drawers, and toolboxes across Tampa Bay. Its full name: Formula 40 of the Water Displacement variety — or, as the kids on the street call it, Double U D-40. Safe for its normal uses… but spray it in a lock?

Tum tum tummmmmmm.

This Just In

Authorities confirm an alarming rise in lock failures linked to people misusing Double U D-40 inside door locks. While the spray works wonders for squeaky hinges, sticky bolts, and rusty parts, locksmiths warn that inside a lock cylinder it leaves behind residue that attracts dirt, gums up pins, and shortens the life of the hardware.

Eyewitness Accounts

“I saw it crawl through my window… the blue and yellow can. I hollered for Carl, but by the time he got there the lock was working fine. So I thought it was ok. Who knew…”

“It started innocent… just one spray. I told myself after this spray the lock probably wouldn’t need any more. Boy was I wrong. Before I knew it, I was spraying the lock three, maybe four times a week. I told myself I had it under control. I told myself I could stop anytime. But deep down, I knew I needed help… I just didn’t know where to turn.”

Live at the Scene

We go now live to local legend, locksmith, Ed “The Lock” Smith.

“They keep blasting them… with that… with that stuff. You know what it does? They gum up… they choke… and sometimes… sometimes they die. The only way then is takin’ the guts out. I’m talking springs, top pins, bottom pins — dumped out on some table in the back of a van. Some locks we can patch up, bring ’em back by reusing parts. But sometimes… the pinning… the service call… it can all just get a bit too much.”

With that, Ed zipped his tool bag shut, waved the cameras back, and walked slowly toward the next waiting door, leaving only silence in his wake.

Back in the Studio

Anchor 1 (solemn): “Powerful words there from Ed ‘The Lock’ Smith… a man on the frontlines of a crisis most of us never even knew existed.”

Anchor 2 (forced smile): “Coming up after the break… what does a safe with acne, a coyote a bit too wiley, and the possible hidden dangers of walls with tunnels painted on them… all have in common? Find out… tonight at 11.”

The Verdict

Formula 40 of the Water Displacement variety — Double U D-40 — is safe for normal uses on everyday household items… but spraying it in a lock is a different story.

For more on the growing crisis, we turn now to senior correspondent Alejandra “NotIllegal” Cruz, reporting live from the scene:

“What we’re seeing is a pattern of misuse. Double U D-40 is a solvent, not a lock lubricant. Once sprayed inside, it leaves residue that attracts dust, gums the pins, and accelerates wear. Locksmiths stress that non-petroleum products designed specifically for locks — like Houdini Spray — are the safer option. Until then, the cycle of jammed cylinders and emergency service calls will continue.”

For the locks that still stand, this is Alejandra “NotIllegal” Cruz, Tampa Bay.
